There are women & men who embody the best of humanity through love, kindness, & sacrifice and I'd like to say THANK YOU in the form of a hand-sewn, luxury NettieBear®. Will you contribute to help me reach our $20,000 goal to send 100 NettieBears® to deserving people all over the country?
NettieBears® are hand-sewn teddy bears stuffed with love. Yes each teddy bear is sewn BY HAND and born from lavish fabric remnants used by high-end clothing designers from around the world.
Our couture one-of-a-kind bears are made from luxury textiles such as 100% cashmere, silk velvet, Italian cotton, English worsted wool, cashmere corduroy and cashmere blends to name a few.
Each bear is designed uniquely and has its own creative birthmarks, both intentional and accidental. Some bears are a part of a large collection of limited edition bears, but every NettieBear®is still uniquely crafted.
Hand-sewing is a time consuming process. Each NettieBear® takes 4-7 hours from pattern cutting to finished bear, depending on the size and fabric used. This is substantially longer than it takes to make a teddy bear on a sewing machine or using major production equipment.
My late grandmother, Nettie B. Davenport, was green before being green was even chic. Growing up poor in rural Mississippi, she learned at an early age to make due with what you have.
My grandmother would tell me, “There is beauty in everything and everyone you just have to take the time to look.” She taught me to sew by making doll clothes and quilts from fabric that other people would consider scraps. Unfortunately for my fingers, I never learned to use a sewing machine, but that never stopped me.
The past couple of years have been a major struggle for me. I’ve dealt with financial problems, health issues and family tragedies.
As I dealt with life’s trials and tribulations, a dear friend told me that when you’re having a difficult time…”Just Keep Sewing!” So that’s exactly what I did.
Like my grandmother, there are countless women (and men) who make uncommon sacrifices for the sake of children who may or may not be their own. Through their motherly love, they keep families from crumbling under the weight of crisis or burdens. They support the dreams of children. They instill values that are essential to our personal success. They don’t do it for reward or recognition, but more importantly out of the kindness of their heart.
This #NBMotherly campaign is about giving. Sharing a sincere thank you to the remarkable people who embody the best of humanity, kindness, love and sacrifice.
We cannot become complacent about the deterioration of our society. In our large cities and even local towns, the daily news is filled with such sadness. Selfish acts, desperation, disrespect and violence that make us feel that all of humanity is lost. Have we lost the value of human life and the importance of love?
I hope not. In fact, I want to recognize the greatness in people and the positive, healing power of motherly love. I want spread joy and love to the world one bear at a time.
On June 16, 2013, I will launch a new NettieBear® website.
I invite all of you to think about someone who truly is the picture of motherly love. Visit the NettieBear® website and nominate that person to receive a free limited edition Motherly Love NettieBear® by mail.
By National Grandparent’s Day this year, I’m going to honor the legacy of my grandmother Nettie B. Davenport by giving away at least 100 limited edition Motherly Love NettieBears® to deserving people who embody the true spirit of motherly love, changing the lives of people in remarkable ways.
In my heart, I believe we can continue giving away bears for Mother’s Day 2014. Ideally it would be great to give away 365 bears every year. However, I would need to raise about $70,000 to get that started. That’s a stretch goal since I’m completely new to crowdfunding. I’m not sure how many people will support such a good will project, but I hope I can give away tons of bear hugs to deserving people around the world.
Will you please help me raise at least $20,000?

#NBMotherly Signature Collection
Each limited edition Motherly Love NettieBear® will be hand-sewn with careful craftsmanship. The Motherly Love bear is super soft, made with deep rose-colored long pile cotton velvet. The ears, paws, and signature tail are made from suit-weight ultra suede with a unique floral pattern. Because of the fabric patterns, each bear may be slightly different from its brothers and sisters within the collection, but they are all equally adorable and stuffed with love.
