Community Story of the Week: 10/02/2013

I apologize in advance for this not being as “optimistic” as some of our other Community Stories of the Week, but we believe that a voice has to be heard on this topic. The way the animals are treated in the growing food industry is absolutely repulsive. I believe that many agree that they wish they knew where their food was coming from. No, we do not need to know the name of the chicken before it was sent to the grocery store, nor do we have to know what type of grass the cow preferred, but as a minimum, we, as consumers, should know where our food was coming from and how it was treated.

Is Manufactured Cow on the Menu?

After watching the video posted below, you will be able to get a good look at how the majority of the animals that we consume are treated. Each animal is stuffed into a cage that is legitimately smaller than the animal itself. It scours for room, air, and food. It really is sad. Here is the difference between how some cows are raised vs. the majority of cows:

Here is an example of a cow farm where cows are fed a natural diet and have the ability to roam around.

The PETA website states:

“Farmed animals are every bit as intelligent and capable of feeling pain as the dogs and cats we cherish as our companions. They are inquisitive, interesting individuals who value their lives, solve problems, experience fear and pain, and are capable of using tools.

Yet the more than 16 billion animals who are killed for food every year in the U.S. have little legal protection from cruelty that would be illegal if it were inflicted on companion dogs or cats. They are neglected, mutilated, genetically manipulated, put on drug regimens that cause chronic pain and crippling, transported through all weather extremes, and killed in gruesome and violent ways.”

Kind of reminds of you our Article About Monsanto , doesn’t it?

A video that has recently gotten some good attention is the new Chipotle campaign for their fresh and organic way of creating a sustainable large business THAT WORKS. This commercial brings chills up and down my spine. Not only is the commercial made very well, but it is sad to think that this fictional scarecrow/city is a copy of reality. In my opinion, our societal food issues go beyond that of Chipotle’s interpretation. There are a lot of hidden messages in the commercial and it is worth watching more than once to catch them.
