Addicting games such as Angry Birds and Candy Crush are great to pass the time or to avoid doing work, but what about using that time to play a game that expands knowledge, increases vocabulary and helps feed the world? Does that sound too good to be true? Read on, my friends…

Free Rice rewards right answers with food donations. With each correct response given, ten grains of rice are donated to a starving population. Using this method, Free Rice plans to tackle not only world hunger but also fight to provide free education for all.

Subjects range from math, languages, and chemistry to English, humanities and even an SAT test prep. This game isn’t just for students. Freerice’s difficulty levels range from beginners to levels that will “challenge the most scholarly professors.” Members can also create groups and track their total, creating a perfect platform for competition and group cooperation for organizations and schools.

Freerice is owned by the World Food Programme, which distributes the rice. Whenever possible, the WFP buys the rice from the designated country to support the local economy and ensure less money is wasted on transportation.

Since it’s launch in 2007, Freerice and its members have fed millions of people. Here are a couple examples recorded on

In Nepal: fed over 108,000 Bhutanese refuges for three days
In Uganda: fed 66,000 school children for a week

Every meal, every donation, every grain makes a difference. As Freerice advocates on its site, let’s “rice up against hunger.”
